Welcome to Nelson Dewey State Park
Nelson Dewey State Park overlooks the Mississippi River from a 500-foot bluff. At this park you can combine your interest in history with your enjoyment of the outdoors. Camp, hike or picnic high above the Mighty Mississippi. Named for Wisconsin’s first governor, Nelson Dewey, the park offers a rich history, featuring the Dewey home and the nearby Stonefield Historic site.

Camping and reservations
Nelson Dewey State Park has campsites for individuals and families and small and large groups. Reservations are accepted from May 1 through Columbus Day weekend. After that, campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Park roads are not plowed during the winter, but visitors may park at the entrance and walk in to the campground. Groceries and other camping supplies and a laundromat are available in Cassville, about two miles from the park.

Camping reservations for outdoor campsites can be made online or by calling 888-947-2757.
Firewood
Crawford and Vernon counties are both quarantined areas. Firewood is available in the village of Cassville, about two miles from the park. Firewood can also be purchased at the park from the campground hosts in season.
Family campground
The family campground has 45 individual sites, 18 of which are electric. Four of the sites, featuring an excellent view of the Mississippi River high atop the bluff, are walk in only. Flush toilets and showers are located near site 23. The sites are wooded and secluded, making this campground the perfect getaway.
Group camp
A group camping area can accommodate up to 40 people on three separate sites for a total of 120 people. Each site has a large camping area, picnic tables and a large fire ring. A shelter, vault toilets and water are available in the group camp. All group sites at Nelson Dewey are electric.
Hiking
Nelson Dewey State Park offers over two miles of hiking trails. Trails may vary in difficulty. Use caution when on steep bluffs or near a cliff. Stay well away from cliffs, which are not protected by a barricade or barrier.
Picnic areas
There are three picnic areas within the park; Mound Point, Dewey Heights, and Cedar Point, picnic tables and grills are available in all three areas. Dewey Heights picnic area contains two accessible picnic shelters and accessible restrooms.
Boating, canoeing and kayaking
Nelson Dewey State Park does not have river access. A boat landing is in the city of Cassville at Riverside Park.
Fishing
There is no fishing in Nelson Dewey State Park. Riverside Park in Cassville is a popular place to fish.
Hunting and trapping
Hunting and trapping are allowed in the open areas of the park during the Wisconsin state parks hunting and trapping time frame. Trapping is not permitted in closed areas as noted on the park hunting map or within 100 yards of any designated use area, including trails. Certain trap types are restricted on state park properties.
Winter activities
The roads at Nelson Dewey are not maintained during the winter months. The parking lot at the park entrance is plowed. Cross-country skiers, snowshoers and hikers are welcome to park in the parking lot and hike or ski into the park.
