Welcome to St. Clair Landing Family Campground
As one of Hatteras Island’s earliest settlers, the Midgett family once owned all the land from the “Atlantic Ocean to the Pamlico Sound” at the location where St. Clair Landing Family Campground now sits. In the mid-1900’s, St. Clair Midgett parceled off and sold the property from the “road to the ocean” and retained the property running from the “road to the sound”. Its current owner, Irvin Midgett, purchased the land occupied now by the campground in 1994, from his father, Harry, son of St. Clair. At that same time, large parcels of land up and down Hatteras Island were being subdivided and sold for complex development. Irvin’s desire was to build a business on the family land that would improve the property while maintaining its natural beauty as well as its aesthetic and economic value. From this idea, St. Clair Landing Family Campground was born. Hatteras Island is part of the North Carolina barrier island chain that extends into the Atlantic Ocean and, as such, is vulnerable to the extreme forces of nature placed upon her. Irvin’s goal in building St. Clair Landing Family Campground was to disturb as little and to secure as much of the natural environment as possible. Few trees were removed and hundreds more were planted to create natural wind blocks. Hundreds of truckloads of sand were brought in to raise and protect the sound-side from high winds and tides. A dock was built to provide guests access to the marshes and Pamlico Sound. The sound-side dock provides access to some of the best kite-boarding and wind-surfing locations on the east coast; and at St. Clair Landing Campground, we offer one of the best launch sites around. For the fishermen & ladies in the group, the Pamilico Sound is abundant with seasonally-running fish for anyone wanting to cook their catch of the day. Today, St. Clair Landing Family Campground remains in the Midgett family and hosts some 60 campsites ranging from permanent seasonal sites to monthly and overnight camper and tent sites.
