The campground provides an ideal camping destination. It is situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains and is known locally as the jewel of the mountains, where visitors enjoy hiking, fishing, swimming and relaxing on the sandy beach. The campground sits between Sherando Lake and Upper Sherando Lake at an elevation of about 1,800 feet. Upper Sherando is the largest, encompassing 25 acres of cool waters. Both lakes are fed by the South Fork Back Creek. Lower Sherando is the smaller lake at 7 acres, available for fishing only. The lower lake is available for swimming, fishing or relaxing on the sand beach. Many hiking opportunities abound, including the Blue Loop Trail, the Lakeside Trail and the Torry Ridge Trail that heads to Bald Knob. Weekend campfire programs are held at the amphitheater Memorial Day through Labor Day. Other events include a kid's fishing day in May and Smokey Bear's Birthday Celebration in August. The campground is divided into three loops: Meadow Loop has campsites with electric hookups; White Oak Loop is has non-electric campsites; River Bend Loop and the upper part of White Oak have first-come, first-served sites. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, lantern post and campfire ring with grill. Modern showers, flush toilets and drinking water spigots are located throughout the campground. You are camping in the mountains with unleveled ground. Please be prepared. The nearest groceries, fuel, ice and firewood are located at convenience stores along the state road leading to the entrance to Sherando Lake.
