Welcome to Kamp Dels
Warning: Do not, under any circumstances, visit Kamp Dels if you’re aching for a simple, quiet family camping trip. Those aren’t qualities I’m usually looking for (or, perhaps, can’t expect yet) so I was rather attracted to the multitude of activity options at this resort in Waterville, Minnesota. It was, however, the biggest, busiest and spendiest campground we’ve been to yet. And it seems to struggle a bit with an identity crisis: bucolic farm retreat or hopping holiday haven? Kamp Dels is taking the kitchen sink approach.

First off, there’s no denying the kids the interactive outdoor waterpark (a hefty additional $7.50/kid, adults free). The pools had us so captive there wasn’t time to stick even a toe in adjacent Sakatah Lake let alone think about renting one of their varieties of watercraft. After toweling off, a nap might sound tempting – but there’s lots more competing for your downtime: horseback trail rides, two playgrounds, and a charming petting farm arranged in a maze that had my girls wandering happily among the animals for a good long time.

By all means take a break and grill some dinner. You’ll need the sustenance for evening themed activities: the weekend we visited featured a host of tournaments that took advantage of the camp’s sporting facilities. Sand volleyball, basketball, tennis, softball, you name it.  Head to bed early (or not, in the case that the live oldies cover band is playing your weekend) and rest up. But don’t forget to set the alarm lest the fresh-baked Sunday doughnuts sell out up at the lodge. While you’re out early, hit the driving range before the heat sets in (or mini golf).
