Chincoteague Island
Chincoteague Island, a quaint seaside town on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, is best known for its famous wild ponies. Pony Penning, which always takes place on the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday in July, features a round up and swim of the herd and an auction of the foals. On Friday, the remaining ponies swim back to Assateague. The town features numerous hotels, bed and breakfasts and campgrounds as well as a wide variety of restaurants and ice cream parlors. Visit the original location of The Jackspot restaurant and enjoy waterfront dining under the palm trees on the sandy beach.
Wallops Island
Wallops Island, part of the barrier island that stretch along the Eastern seaboard of Virginia, is home to NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility. Established in 1945 by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics as a center for aeronautic research. Today, Wallops is NASA’s principal facility for management and implementation of suborbital research programs. The Wallops Island National Wildlife Refuge is also located on the island. The Wallops Visitor Center features event such as an Astronomy Series, Space Station Saturdays and various children’s programs that are both educational and fun!
Virginia Beach
Virginia Beach, a coastal resort city in southeastern Virginia, is situated at the meeting point of the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean. Nearby attractions include Kiptopeke State Park and the Eastern Shore National Wildlife Refuge, which offer excellent opportunities for hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, bird watching and more! For wine enthusiasts, a visit to local award-winning vineyards will create a perfect afternoon. Cape Charles has two beautiful golf courses at the Bay Creek Golf and Residential community designed by golf legends and the downtown Historic Palace Theatre offers life performances, art showings and special movie screenings.
