Welcome to Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park
Once slated to become a condominium development, this park contains one of the largest tracts of West Indian tropical hardwood hammock in the United States. The park is home to 84 protected species of plants and animals, including wild cotton, mahogany mistletoe and the American crocodile. Exploring the park´s trails gives visitors a chance to see some of these rare species of plants and animals. Over six miles of nature trails provide a wealth of opportunities for birdwatchers and photographers. Most of the park´s trails are paved and accessible to both bicycles and wheelchairs. Signs along a self-guided nature trail provide information about the park´s ecosystem and wildlife. Ranger-guided tours are also available.  Previously known as one of Key Largo’s “best-kept secrets,” this park has become a favorite of locals and tourists alike. Winter months make it a perfect excursion with mild temperatures and no mosquitoes. Visitors quickly become stewards for the environment, as it is home to 84 protected species of plants and animals. Created to protect the unique status as a tropical hardwood forest in the United States, the park’s focal point is a self-guided nature walk along the main trail. At the “circle” one will find a native plant butterfly garden and a picnic table (please pack out your trash).  The Port Bougainville Trail extension lengthens your walk by one or two miles on the loop trail. Use of this trail no longer requires a backcountry permit, but visitors must stay on the designated path. Additional backcountry trails may be explored simply by completing a backcountry permit at the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park Ranger Station.  The park operates on the honor system, so please fill out an envelope, enclose your entrance fee and deposit in the “iron ranger.” Your support of this unique gem of a Florida State Park will ensure survival of its environment for generations to come. Explore and enjoy the park today!
